TileStyle recently completed a beautiful kitchen renovation project with Della Interiors. Working closely together, Donal Murphy from TileStyle's Kitchen Showroom and Antonina (Toni) Sandulescu, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Della Interiors transformed what was a traditional and dated kitchen into a fresh, minimal and contemporary space. We recently met with Toni to chat about the success of the project and how working with TileStyle was a big part of the solution for Della Interiors and their clients.
TILESTYLE: What was the client brief and what did they hope to achieve?
DELLA INTERIORS:The original kitchen was an outdated Shaker style and the clients wanted something brighter and more contemporary, a complete shift from traditional to modern with clean lines. They wanted a high-tech, functional kitchen and were willing to invest in quality appliances and move from their 20 year old kitchen to something completely new. They specifically requested:
- a more practical, minimal and functional layout.
- more efficient storage
- a modern bright kitchen with clean lines and handleless units
- a redesign of the island unit especially the internal layout
TILESTYLE: What wasn't working that needed to be changed?
DELLA INTERIORS: A redesign of the island unit and overall kitchen layout was needed, it was a small space that wasn't working. The kitchen island was poorly planned in terms of storage and needed to be increased to accomodate two seating spaces.
TILESTYLE: What were your design proposals?
We suggested replacing the top cabinets above the sink area with floating shelving and LED lighting to open up the space. In a small kitchen installing floating shelves can really open up the space.
To bring warmth to the space we originally proposed the beautiful Porcelanosa Xtone Calacatta Gold tile for floors, walls and island unit. However, our 3D renders showed that this was too busy due to the dynamic veining in the tile. We ultimately chose elegant neutral tiles from Italgraniti for the floor, retaining the Calacatta Gold for the walls and waterfall island.
We initially proposed cladding the extractor fan in Calacatta stone too, however, once again our 3D images showed this was far too busy. In the end we wrapped the canopy hood in the same material as the kitchen units instead of stone creating a more balanced design. It's important to review as you go along, 3D renders help showcase the whole concept and influence the design process.
TILESTYLE: What were the key challenges, and how was TileStyle a part of the solution in overcoming them?
DELLA INTERIORS: Due to the pandemic, the supply chain was dramatically disrupted in every sector and we faced delays with product deliveries.
Donal is highly knowledgeable and professional, he knows furniture design and agreed with me the kitchen was functional and would work. But not only that, he anticipated the challenges with supply chain disruption due to Covid. His tremendous help in managing the project, from ordering products to dealing with unexpected delays, updating the client, coming up with alternatives, made our work easy and stress-free.
TILESTYLE: What clever details are there in the kitchen?
DELLA INTERIORS: One of the most efficient pieces in the design is the Lemans corner unit from Porcelanosa. This is a neat storage solution that keeps everything organised and compact, maximising the space in a blind corner unit. There is also the Franke Culinary Centre Sink unit which offers a complete kitchen solution and of course the Quooker tap is a great investment in any new kitchen in terms of lifestyle. No need for a kettle any more!
