The Hoxton Dublin - Heritage, Hospitality and Contemporary Design

TileStyle at the Hoxton Dublin - Blending Heritage, Hospitality and Contemporary Design

With 19 stylish hotels across 15 vibrant cities, The Hoxton has officially opened its first Irish location at the historic Central Hotel site on Exchequer Street in the heart of Dublin city centre. The arrival of The Hoxton Dublin marks a significant addition to Dublin’s thriving hospitality scene. It transforms one of the city’s most iconic heritage buildings into a contemporary 129-room lifestyle hotel with all the brands signature warmth and style while preserving and enhancing its protected historic character.

One of Dublin’s most recognisable city-centre landmarks, during 2023 excavations, archaeologists discovered 1,200-year-old Viking era remnants and evidence of The Black Pool, “Dubh Linn” where Dublin gets its name.

The ambitious redevelopment was delivered by main contractor Duggan Brothers and included extensive refurbishment, reconfiguration and structural expansion of the protected structure, together with selective demolition and new build elements. The redevelopment sees the return of the much loved first floor Library Bar.

The Hoxton sits within the lifestyle-boutique hotel category. The Hoxton Dublin offers guests a relaxed, design conscious environment with vintage inspired interiors. The hotel lobby creates an inviting atmosphere with comfortable seating areas for remote working, a lively café and a busy bar that reflects the energy of Dublin city.

TileStyle's Professional Services team and ALTU Architects

Working closely alongside ALTU Architects, TileStyle’s Professional Services team delivered a comprehensive specification solution supplying premium tiles, sanitaryware and luxury vinyl flooring across all 129 guest bathrooms, accessible bathrooms and public restrooms. The project showcases products from many of TileStyle's leading international brands, including Kährs of Sweden. Careful consideration was given to maintenance requirements and technical performance standards across all bathroom and flooring installations.

What was the design brief for TileStyle's Professional Services team?

ALTU Architects tasked the TileStyle team with keeping the original design by Bryan O’Sullivan Studio of London while adapting it to work with a local interpretation and as always achieving the financial brief and budget, demonstrating value for the client. It was essential that TileStyle proposed suitable products for a commercial bathroom environment, matching the character of the building with longevity in mind. The design needed to be sympathetic to the historical site and the Victorian red brick exterior.

Overcoming key challenges on site

One of the most complex aspects of refurbishing this protected historic building involved overcoming varying floor levels and integrating modern construction methods within the original structure. TileStyle’s experienced Professional Services team collaborated closely with contractors and consultants to develop bespoke flooring and bathroom solutions tailored specifically to the unique conditions of the building.

Clever bathroom design details

Guest bathroom details throughout the hotel demonstrate clever design details and the project’s commitment to quality, comfort and intelligent space planning. Features include walk-in shower systems designed to ensure waterproofing, durability and peace of mind, concealed cisterns maximising on room space and bespoke shower enclosures designed for tighter spaces. Traditional skirting and dado rails in contemporary colour palettes add a nod to the past with an elegant modern twist.

Accessibility was also prioritised. TileStyle's Professional Services team carefully selected products and suggested layouts for less-abled guest bathrooms, ensuring inclusivity without compromising on style.
