business to art logo 2013

So you want to apply for the Allianz Business to Arts Awards? Here’s what you should do:

  • The awards are for creative partnerships between business and the arts. If you’ve a great collaboration, start preparing your application with the business/project/organisation/artist you partner with.
  • Tell the story. How did the relationship begin, develop and evolve?
  • State your objectives. In your application, clearly state the objectives of all partners, and demonstrate how they were realised.
  • Show that the partnership had good results. Mention any publicity, feedback, comments or evaluations.

Need some help with your application? Have a look at the FAQs below.

FAQs

What do you mean by a presentation?
The presentation just means up to 3 A4 pages where you demonstrate why your project / organisation should win the award.

What if I want to also apply for the Jim McNaughton / TileStyle €10,000 Artist’s Bursary?
If you want to apply for this bursary in addition to an application for the other categories, you will have to include another 800 words focusing on the nominated artist, their relationship with the organisation nominating them, and how they will use the bursary to develop their work to a new level.

What if I want to only apply for the Jim McNaughton / TileStyle €10,000 Artist’s Bursary?
Talk about your organisation’s relationship with the artist(s) and the proposed project, along with the 800 words and any supplementary material.

What do you mean by ‘emerging artist’?
To qualify as an emerging artist, you should be developing your work and aiming to take your practice to a new level. ‘Emerging artist’ has nothing to do with age. In a way, you should present the case as part of your application as to why you should be considered an emerging artist.

How do I apply for the Dublin Airport Authority €5,000 Arts Award?
All nominations are automatically entered into the DAA Arts Award.

What counts as supplementary material?
Any visuals you could not have in the presentation, such as images of the project/organisation, images of events, brochures, catalogues and press clippings. Don’t overload the judges, just give them an idea of your work.

How do I apply for more than one category in the one presentation?
Just make sure that you have demonstrated how you have met the criteria for each category within those 3 A4 pages, and remember to tick the boxes for all the categories you want to apply for.

What if I have several or many sponsors/partnerships?
You should include information on all of them. Include contact information for all of the involved sponsors on a separate page, and indicate that you have done so in the ‘Business’ field of the form. The same applies for the Artists/Arts Organisation section. What is important is that all businesses/organisations involved must know that you are applying for this award.

Do Government bodies count as sponsors or partners?
For the Jim McNaughton / TileStyle €10,000 Artist’s Bursary, any organisation can nominate you, including arts organisations. For the Jim McNaughton Perpetual Award for Best Commissioning Practice, it is possible for County Councils to apply for commissioning Public Art, if there has been some business or other non-arts organisation involved.

Can I email my application?
No, you must send 8 hard copies of your application form (so we can see the signature in original form) and nomination presentation, which includes 8 copies of your supplementary information.

Click here for information on the application process, the alumni of past winners, and to download the application form.

Tony's Dream for Mother's Day

image 9 resized

“A man loves his sweetheart the most; his wife the best, but his mother the longest” (Irish Proverb).

And Mother's Day is a celebration of honouring mothers and motherhood.  A mother is a woman who takes on the unconditional responsibility to nurture the emotional and physical well-being of her children. And any woman who manages to do that successfully within the chaos of running a home and the pressure of juggling a career, I take my hat off to.

So I dreamt of a design for a bathroom which would be unique for my mother.  And I created a “Spathroom”.  A destination where my mum could come to and connect and be nourished.  A retreat within the confines of her own home, a place where she can relax and recharge her mind, body and spirit featuring........ a sumptuous private bath....embracing aromatherapy and hydrotherapy.

Hydrotherapy at its heart just means using water to heal the body or the mind, and it’s been in practice since the days of the Greeks.  Today in the age of daily showers, we tend to see a bath as an indulgence, but it’s a time-honoured practice and plenty of busy, exciting people from Cleopatra to Napoleon were fond of long, hot baths.

A long hot soak in a hot bath can detoxify, relax tight muscles, improve skin quality, ease a weary mind and help you sleep at night.

“God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers” (Jewish Proverb)

Congratulations to all mothers everywhere and to mine especially.

The brothers Grimm put a mirror firmly at the centre of their Snow White fairytale.  Throughout the ages mirrors have been attributed with many mystical powers and superstitions.  The Chinese art of Feng Shui looks to the art of positioning and placement of mirrors to create harmony and relaxation throughout the environment they are positioned in.

Mirrors are an essential interior decoration item. Most will regard them as that finishing touch for their bathroom.

Mirrors have developed in both size and functionality.  They can be as simple as that old word “looking glass” with just your reflection and no frills attached, led illuminated, backlit or surface lit. Add to that, built in radios and clocks, on/off sensors, pull-cord switches, demister pads and built-in magnifying mirrors. And of course there is the option of mirrored bathroom cabinets.

spooky bath

Do you have a Spooky Bathroom??? And No - I don’t just mean now at Halloween!!!

Do you have traumatic thoughts of entering your bathroom? Are you embarrassed at the thoughts of visitors using your bathroom? Do you have blocked drains, tired sanitary-ware (avocado, dusty pink, baby blue ceramics spring to mind……), hard to maintain space, poor design, dated tiles, poor ventilation, inadequate lighting, a shower where you would have to run around in to get wet???? Could it get any more nightmarish!!

A Bathroom is a very essential space in your home, it offers you and your family a place to invigorate, re-energize and relax….. a space to unwind after a day of tiring activities. Maybe now is the time to change it...

What to consider.....

Style- traditional or modern
Type of products - bear in mind the use and users of the bathroom
Measure your space, window size and door size
Discuss  and  plot position of the products - maximize  use of  your space, include extra room around the products for moving around
Plan out your plumbing, including water supply and waste requirements
Plan the installation and  layout of tiles
Plan for storage, lighting, heating and ventilation
Get a quote - including costs of all products and labour
Select an installer and purchase the products, but don't remove old fittings until the new ones have been delivered.
And don’t forget accessories such as mirrors, robe hooks and toothbrush holders!

So - what are you waiting for? Banish those horrors. Start planning your new bathroom now - And give us a shout here at TileStyle - we’ll give you a dig out with your design!

Spa Treatments for free.....

Dark evenings and the need to unwind and relax after a hard day at work or just simply a bit of “me” time is essential today. So how about creating a spa in the privacy of your own home? Just imagine - working to your own schedule, no appointment necessary and no fees...

It is often said that Cleopatra bathed in milk to keep her skin soft and supple. The lactic acid in milk exfoliates the skin, encouraging the removal of dead cells thus making room for new skin. Other ingredients for homemade treatments include tea, citrus fruits, oatmeal and virgin olive oil.   These treatments can also  aid a wide range of ailments.

Aromatherapy is the practice of using plant oils for psychological and physical well-being. It is believed that different aromas can influence our moods.  Consider chamomile and rose to calm …. lavender and vanilla to soothe….

neom for mothers day 007

These fabulous Neom Bath Oils, Room Sprays & Candles are available here at TileStyle

Preparing for your Personalised Spa Day:

• Deep clean  your bathroom to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere

• Prepare your treatments

• Have some clean, warm fluffy towels, a robe and some slippers on hand to make you feel extra pampered

• Light your favorite candle or create a room spray with essential oils. And remember do not leave your candle unattended……

• Line up some relaxing music to help you unwind

• Seek out some dark chocolate. It is considered to assist in lowering your blood pressure and is full of antioxidants.  And wash it down with a healthy fruit drink!

Relax in the bath for at least 20 minutes. Don’t rinse or towel-dry your body.  Allow it to air-dry instead.  And be aware of manufacturer’s warranties and your own personal allergies.

Finally, you may need to consider splashing out (pardon the pun!) and buying a new bath altogether for your personalised spa.  We love the idea of a free standing bath…….

No way am I turning on my heating this early in the year said my colleague to his son when he asked him to put on the heating. Put on another jumper! It got me thinking about checking my own heating system at home.........

Here are a few tips to get you through the winter.......

1. Get your boiler serviced. Use recognised qualified and accredited tradesmen.

2. Bleed your radiators. Balancing the heating system entails adjusting the flow of water through each of your radiators so they all run at equal temperatures and take an equal amount of time to reach their operating temperature. Lack of balancing within a system is often the cause of cold spots on radiators, radiators failing to heat up properly, or radiators making noises.  An air vent (also known as  a bleed valve) is a small valve, which enables air that has accumulated at the top of a radiator to be let out from the radiator using a special air vent key. Bleed/vent keys can be purchased from any good builders merchants.  Ideally radiators should be checked for air accumulation at least once a year. Start at your lowest radiator first.  Remember to have an old towel and container for gathering liquid as you bleed and don not ever over loosen the vent.

3.Check if you need new radiators. Heat output will depend on the size and surface area of the radiator.  For example, ladder-type radiators will have a smaller surface area than conventional panel radiators.  You may need to invest in an alternative size.  When selecting your new radiator locations, normally the best place is in the coldest part of the room, as cold air creates better heat conduction.

4. Save Money. Install thermostats in your rooms or put TRV's (Temperature Regulated valves) on your radiators.

Anyway as I reflected again, on the question of "Have you put your heating on yet? I felt the old adage of "A stitch in time saves nine. I'm off home now to check my heating system!

Both awards were sponsored by Gerard’s late father and TileStyle founder, Jim McNaughton.

Gerard explains “My late father Jim had always been a great supporter of the arts, believing they made a wonderful contribution to Ireland, not just artistically, but also socially and economically. Jim was involved with B2A since its inception, and upon his passing in 2007, we decided it would be a fitting tribute to Jim to have two annual awards in his name. The first would be an award for Best Commissioning Practice, highly appropriate given that Jim & TileStyle commissioned many artists over the years. The second would be a €10,000 bursary to an artist who has been involved in commissioning a project, with the bursary allowing the artist to further progress their project or start a new project. I am thrilled that the winners of both these awards encapsulate the spirit in which the awards were intended”

While having a cup of coffee with a plumber friend the other day in the showroom, we got on to the subject of cleaning bathrooms and how a recent bout of autumnal cleaning had taken hold … as you do…..

Now my plumber friend is certainly NOT someone who spends more time than most on household chores but was looking at this from a purely business perpective for some of his clients (So he told me!). He said he was frequently asked for products that are suitable for bathrooms. Naturally, I commented we had just introduced a new range of products from Lithofin aimed at bathrooms and wet rooms.

These new products are Lithofin - KF Ceramic Clean, Lithofin KF Mildew Away and Lithofin Grout Cleaner. I outlined the characteristics of each product much to to his amazement and delight! Now let me share these details with you…..

Delighted with himself he bid me adieu and left with a new arsenal of cleaning products under his arm. And of course I told him to keep in mind all the manufacturers warranties about cleaning and maintenance……

All works have now been completed on the Outdoor Garden Area of The National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght.  The Design for the area incorporates many of the features young patients discussed with Architect Dermot Bannon in the initial brain-storming stages.
Our picture shows Mosaics donated by TileStyle for the project.  We are delighted to be associated with this beautiful garden.
“Room to Improve” will follow the progress of the build from start to finish in an episode scheduled to air in December.
